I was born
in Helsinki in 1948, educated in my
home town and have a B.A. (1972) and
M.A. (2002) in English from the
University of Helsinki. As a young
student I was taught by author and
translator Eila Pennanen who
introduced me to the art of
translation. Together we translated
the first two parts of The Lord of the
Rings, and I have been a freelance
translator ever since.
Since 1985 I
have had homes in both the
U.K. (Oxford and West Wales)
and Finland (Helsinki and
Nuuksio).
I was appointed
Artist Professor in September 2008.
